Big Blow for APC as PDP Takes over Zamfara following S’ Court Ruling

The All Progressive Congress (APC) has been dealt a big blow in Zamfara state following the ruling of the Supreme Court which sacked all the elected candidates of the ruling party during the 2019 general elections.

The five-man panel of justice, in a unanimous judgement on Friday, held that the APC branch in Zamfara state failed to conduct primaries in accordance with the party rules and ruled that the second party with the highest number of votes should take over the political leadership of the state.

In the lead judgement by Justice Paul Adamu Galinji, the Apex Court held that all votes cast for the APC are ‘Wasted Votes’ and declared that all Political parties with the second highest votes in the elections and the required spread, are elected to the various elections.

The APC had won the gubernatorial as well as all the national and state assembly seats in Zamfara State, but the joy of those elected was short-lived when the Court of Appeal declared that their parties did not conduct valid primaries, a development that induced anxiety in the state as to what would happen as the May 29, 2019 inauguration day draws near.

Chief among the persons likely to be affected by the apex court ruling include the state Governor-elect, Mukhtar Shehu Idris. Senators like Senator Abdulazeez Yari (Zamfara West); Aliyu Ikra Bilbis (Zamfara Central); Kaura Tijjani Yahaya (Zamfara North); seven elected members of the House of Representatives and 24 House of Aseembly members. They all belong to the incumbent governor’s camp.

The Opposition party (PDP) scored the second highest valid votes in the general elections. This automatically makes the Zamfara state governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Bello Muhammad Mutawalle the new Governor of the state.

After the Supreme Court judgement, there was pandemonium in front of the Apex court as irate youths engage in frantic exchange of blows. Watch the video below.
