In the early hours of Sunday, the Elephants of Ivory Coast came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in an entertaining encounter in Group C of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Japan’s star player Keisuke Honda had put them ahead with an impressive strike after 16 minutes and, as Ivory Coast continued to miss chance after chance, it seemed their bid to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time would take an early hit as Colombia had beaten Greece in Group C earlier in the day.

Ivory Coast left the veteran, Drogba on the bench but things quickly changed after striker came in while his team was still down 1-0. Drogba’s arrival immediately lifted the Ivory Coast team.   Wilfried Bony equalized for the Africans in the 64th minute with a header and Gervinho put them ahead with another header in the space of two minutes. Both goals were set up by curling crosses from defender Serge Aurier.

The Elephants are second in Group C.
