European club football’s showcase finals of the Champions League and the Europa League are to be scheduled in the same week as of 2019, UEFA’s executive committee decided on Tuesday.

This season the Europa League final will be contested at Stockholm’s Friends Arena on Wednesday May 24, while the Champions League final is at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff 10 days later on Saturday June 3.

The current schedule according to Punch has been in place since UEFA’s well-received decision to switch the Champions League final from a Wednesday to Saturday night as of 2010.

The latest rejigging of the schedule is aimed at getting the Europa League final to be played after domestic championships have finished.

“The main idea is to play the two finals the same week, and this idea has been approved,” UEFA said.

“We wanted the Europa League final to be played after the domestic season.”

In 2019 the Europa final will be played on Wednesday May 29 and the Champions League final three days later on Saturday June 1.
