INEC-LOGOThe committee on Political Parties and Electoral Matters has said it is proposing that the president be stripped of powers to appoint Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC).

The committee at its deliberations however recommended that such responsibility be left under the purview of the National Judicial Commission.

Felix Akagbue, a delegate on the platform of ALGON and member of the committee said: “we are recommending now that the National Judicial Commission should be the one that appoints the Chairman of INEC.

“Before now it is the duty of the President to appoint the chairman and other board members but there are recommendations now that this powers should be removed from the president, there should be other bodies mandated to do so.
“As far as we are concerned INEC is not an institution under federal government, it is an independent institution that is being funded by the three tier of government.”
