Germany Vs Portugal: Klose On The Verge Of History

Miroslav-Klose

Germany striker Miroslav Klose became the top scorer in Germany’s history when he scored his 69 goal against Armenia some weeks ago. He now has a golden opportunity to become the all-time top scorer in World Cup history when Germany lock horns with Portugal in the first match of Day 5 at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Klose equaled the 14 goals record of compatriot Gard Muller at the 2010 World Cup and is just two goals away from surpassing Brazilian star Ronaldo (15 goals).

It is widely believed that Joachim Low included the 36-year-old sticker in his squad for this purpose and he’s thus expected to spearhead the German frontline against Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal. The current world footballer of the year is also the all-time top scorer of Portugal with 49 goals in 111 international appearances.

Both sides have played a total of nine times before and after the Berlin Wall. Germany won the lion share of five matches with Portugal’s only victory coming at Euro 2000.

They are both undefeated in their last three warm-up matches but Portugal finished second in their qualifying group behind Russia and had to overcome Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden in the play-offs.

Germany have managed to reach the Semifinal of the last three editions; losing to Brazil in 2002 and winning bronze in 2006 and 2010. Portugal on the other hand reached the semifinal in 2006; losing the third place match to Germany and were eliminated at the second round in 2010 by eventual champions, Spain.
