Monaco defender Elderson Echiejile has urged for peaceful polls in Nigeria as the country votes in presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday.

The elections come six weeks late after they were postponed due to security concerns in the north eastern part of the country where terrorist group Boko Haram has held sway until recently.

This year’s election has been the closest in Africa’s most populated country since the return to civilian rule in 1999, and has been tipped to go to the wire, leaving the country divided between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the main opposition All Progressives Congress.

Echiejile, who was part of the Nigeria squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title in South Africa, tweeted on Friday evening: “As we go to the polls tomorrow, it is important for us all to have the interest of the nation at heart. Let’s #OneIndivisibleNigeria.

“Nigeria is ours, we can’t afford to let our cultural or religious differences split us. #UnitedNigeria #VoteAndNotFight”

Echiejile’s Monaco has qualified to play in the quarter final of the Uefa Champions League after seeing off opponents Arsenal in the knockout round.
