The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Thursday called on the federal government and security agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and environs to quickly intervene and prevent the ugly attacks by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) members on doctors in public health institutions in Abuja.

The call, according to the doctors, has become necessary as attacks on medical doctors and government hospitals across the city by JOHESU members were intensifying.

THISDAY checks revealed that besides the attack on a senior medical doctor, who nearly lost her life, JOHESU members also attacked the National Hospital, Abuja, and the research laboratory of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.
In the said attacks, JOHESU members laid siege to several departments, including those outside their jurisdiction,  harassing other health workers who were on duty.

In Gwagwalada,  JOHESU members were believed to have physically attacked and assaulted a Consultant Pathologist and other research assistants in the hospital.

Speaking to journalists on the crisis, Chairman of the FCT chapter of NMA, Dr Fatima Mairami, said the call for government and security agencies to intervene has become necessary in order to safeguard the lives of its members and other health workers rendering essential services from the incessant attacks by JOHESU members.
