Goodluck Jonathan on Monday announced the appointment of Mr Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with immediate effect.

The former governor had defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, shortly after he left office in 2014.

President Jonathan also confirmed the appointment of the Acting Director General, Mounir Gwarzo, as the Director General of the Commission.

Gwarzo was appointed on acting capacity shortly after the tenure of the former director-General of the commission, Arunma Oteh, ended last year.

However, the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Femi Thomas, was relieved of his duties by Mr. president and replaced by Olufemi Akingbade as the acting Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the agency.
