The Supreme Court has on Thursday withdrawn the certificate of return issued to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), David Lyon and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, as the governor-elect and deputy governor-elect of Bayelsa State and declared the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Duoye Diri as the winner of the election held on November 16, 2019.

The Supreme Court’s ruling was based on the fact that Degi-Eremienyo, presented a forged certificate to the electoral commission. This has therefore infected the joint ticket with which he and the governorship candidate, Lyon, won the election.

The Court has also ordered that the candidate of the party that scored the second-highest number of votes in the November 16, 2019 gubernatorial polls should be sown in as governor of the State.

The figures available revealed that Lyon scored 352,552 votes, while PDP’s Duoye Diri came second wth 143,172 votes which makes him the right candidate to assume the seat.

The swearing-in of Duoye Diri as the new governor of Bayelsa state is scheduled to hold on Friday, February 14, 2020.
