Lionel Messi’s wonderful freekick scored against Liverpool during the first leg of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League Semi-Final has been chosen by UEFA as the best goal of the competition.
The effort from 30 yards out against one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Alisson Becker, was worthy of winning any match. It was in the 81st minute at the Camp Nou. Despite not putting on the best performance, Valverde’s side found themselves 2-0 up on the night.
A freekick within striking distance is always left to the little Argentine. Messi stepped up and did what he does best: finding the corner of the goal. It was his 12th goal in 9 Champions League matches. The return leg didn’t see him add to his tally.
